The Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper suddenly left his team for personal reasons, will miss the game against the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight.
Cooper just returned from the 2026 Olympics where he led Team Canada to a silver medal. It wasn't the gold everyone expected, and the disappointment of that loss was still fresh.
Now, his focus has shifted from the ice to something much more important. The team has stayed quiet on the specifics, and they are rightfully asking for privacy.
Just as the NHL schedule ramps back up following the Olympic break, the Lightning find themselves in a difficult spot.
Indeed, concerning news on the coach emerged online.
Cooper steps away from the Lightning after Olympics for personal matter
Jon Cooper will miss tonight's game against Craig Berube and the Maple Leafs for personal reasons, leaving Nikita Kucherov and the Lightning without their leader.
NHL insider David Pagnotta was the first to report the news on X. He noted that Cooper had to leave the team immediately to attend to a private matter:
The Lightning locker room is a veteran group, but losing the longest-tenured coach in the league is a massive blow. He is the glue that holds that bench together during high-pressure moments.
Tampa Bay is currently 8-1-1 in their last ten games, and stand at the top of the Atlantic Division with 78 points.
Tonight, in the first game back after the Olympics, the Lightning will need to pull together and play for their coach.
It's going to be a long night against the desperate Maple Leafs, but this team has proven they can handle adversity before.
We don't know when the bench boss will return to the NHL. For now, the thoughts of the entire hockey community are with him and his family.
