Jon Cooper, head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, says goaltenders are getting too much protection after his team had two disallowed goals in an elimination game

With his team facing the prospect of a first-round exit from the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs last night, Tampa Bay Lightning coach Jon Cooper had to deal with two disallowed goals and ended up losing 5-1. Cooper is not at all happy.

While not coach will ever be ok with having two goals taken off the board, Cooper brings up an interesting point by saying it was incidental contact in both cases, the result of net-front battles.

"Again, it's like, net front battles aren't allowed anymore? And that's part of everybody's game. The boxing out that goes there, it's like prison rules in the playoffs, but it's not prison rules for the goalie? The second something happens we might as well put skirts on them then, if that's how it's going to be. They have to battle through stuff too It's a war down there. I think we're letting the goalies off the hook."- ScoutingtheRefs.com

While Cooper's point is an interesting one, not everyone was happy about the way he worded his complaint. Some felt the skirt comments was uncalled for an unnecessary.

"The open sexism here just can't be part of a head coach's vernacular."

"Jon Cooper should be fined for this crap. Stop with the misogyny. You can be angry without using hateful rhetoric to get your point across."

With the Bolts now out of the playoffs, the team's attention now turns to unrestricted free agents, including lifelong Lightning player Steven Stamkos. Cooper said he believes Stammer should be with Tampa Bay for his entire career.
