NHL players more impressed with Auston Matthews than Connor McDavid
Every year the NHL turns to the Professional Hockey Writers Association to help handout the league's awards. The writers vote on the winners of each award, which sometimes leads to a little bit of controversy. Fans often disagree with those sports writers who have no experience of the game, which over the years has encouraged fans to appreciate the winner of the Ted Lindsay Trophy more.
Last week the NHL revealed the PWHA's choices for the Hart Trophy.
Noticably absent from the list was Toronto Maple Leafs forward Austin Matthews. This season Matthews led the league winning the Rocket Richard Trophy with 69 goals. This week Matthews also received nominations for the Selke Trophy as well the Lady Byng.
Today, Matthews received what is likely his highest honor. It was announced that Matthews has been voted by the other NHL players as one of the three nominees for the Ted Lindsay Award.
Nikita Kucherov, Nathan MacKinnon and
Auston Matthews are the three finalists for the 2023-24 Ted Lindsay Award.
Unlike the hockey writers, the NHL players feel that Matthews 69 goals is more important than McDavid's 100 assists season. Goals have always been weighted heavier than assists, however somehow hockey writers have convinced themselves otherwise.
It will be interesting to see how votes are cast because this will truly prove if there is a divide between what players value and what fans of the game think is important.
