A two-time Stanley Cup champion was placed on waivers by the St. Louis Blues organization, representing a big opportunity for teams across the league looking for veteran depth.

The waivers process allows teams to claim players before they are sent to the AHL, and with the March 6 trade deadline rapidly approaching, such transactions often lead to deals.
The St. Louis Blues have struggled significantly this season. Currently sitting 8th in the Central Division with a 20-28-9 record, the team ranks near the bottom of the league in both goals for and goals against.
With playoff hopes essentially extinguished, many names have appeared on trade boards, and several deals are likely to go down soon in St. Louis.
Today, the team announced an unexpected roster move.

St. Louis Blues place veteran on NHL waivers

The Blues organization announced that they placed the veteran forward Mathieu Joseph on waivers.
Joseph is a seasoned veteran who won two Stanley Cups with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2021 and in 2022.
He brings championship experience and a high-energy "checking" style that many contenders covet for their bottom-six forward groups.
Many teams could be interested in Joseph's services because of his speed and ability to kill penalties. He has recorded 11 points, including two goals, in 39 games this season while logging significant time on the penalty kill.
One of the biggest factors for teams considering a claim is his contract. Joseph is in the final year of a deal that carries a $2.95 million cap hit.
For a team with cap space, Joseph is a "low-risk, high-reward" addition who can help stabilize a third or fourth line.
If he clears, he will report to the Springfield Thunderbirds, but don't be surprised if a playoff-bound team takes a flyer on the former champ.
