Chicago Blackhawks and Vancouver Canucks complete a trade

Moments ago, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman broke the news that the Chicago Blackhawks have traded for Anthony Beauvillier from the Vancouver Canucks.

In return, the Canucks will only receive a fifth round pick in this year's upcoming NHL draft.

Beauvillier is a former first round draft pick of the New York Islanders in the 2015 draft. Now 26 years old, Beauvillier hasn't lived up to his ceiling, but has proven to be a solid offensive depth piece. In 82 games last season between the Islanders and Canucks, 18 goals and 40 points. He was signed to a hefty contract, but is only owed $4.15M for this season and then is an unrestricted free agent.

Notably, Beauvillier was on of the pieces in the Canucks trade that sent Horvat to the Islanders. Now less than a full season later, flipping him for a fifth round draft pick seems lacklustre on Canucks management. For the Blackhawks, they'll acquire a player with a high offensive ceiling on a team where cap space isn't an issue. Hopefully, the Canucks can better spend Beauvillier's cap hit on an upgrade to another part of the team.
