Flames Pecking Order Offended Toffoli

The first domino of the offseason fell for the Calgary Flames roster yesterday with Tyler Toffoli being traded to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for Yegor Sharangovich and a 3rd round pick in the 2023 draft.

The 31 year old led the Flames in scoring last season with 34 goals and 73 points in 82 games.

The Daily Faceoff host Frank Seravalli said Toffoli was offended by the "pecking order" with Lindholm being the #1 priority followed by Backlund, which is why he requested a trade.

I don't really think you can blame general manager Craig Conroy on his priority list. It's understandable that he valued the younger, number one center on the team Elias Lindholm more.

The 28 year old Lindholm averaged a point per game pace during the 2021-2022 season but had his point totals digressed last season to 22 goals and 64 points in 80 games.

Toffoli had a breakthrough 73 point season last year. The previous eight seasons he only broke the 40 point total twice. Toffoli is known to not be the greatest skater and as hockey players age speed is one of the first things to go. There is a very good chance that a long-term deal for Toffoli could end up being a very bad decision. Rumors have him requesting a six year term.
