When the Vancouver Canucks acquires Oliver Ekman-Larsson from the Arizona Coyotes there were multiple questions about the move. Less than 2-years later the deal has completely soured. While the Coyotes have ended up with top prospect Dylan Guenther, the Canucks are now left with nothing but a salary cap penalty for the next 8 years and Conor Garland.

After choosing to buyout OEL's contract, a surprising NHL rule has surfaced. This rule punishes the Coyotes for retaining salary in the original trade.

Breaking: #Yotes    lose one of their 3 retained salary (RS) slots for the next 8 years.

We recently learned that a buyout on a RS contract results in the original team losing a RS slot for the whole buyout duration

We've already updated the site to reflect that new understanding!

This rule is a surprising development and punishes the Coyotes for something that they had no control of. For a team like the Coyotes it is very important to be able to retain salary to receive assets from other teams. Having this spot removed for 8 years just doesn't feel right.
