Artemi Panarin forced his way to Los Angeles, leaving New York behind, and he has finally broken his silence and revealed the truth about why he chose the Kings.
The math is entirely straightforward. With 57 points in 52 games this season, the dynamic Russian sniper brings instant, undeniable offense to a roster begging for a spark.
But this massive blockbuster trade wasn't solely about the on-ice product. It was a calculated lifestyle choice.
Panarin held a full no-movement clause on his massive seven-year deal. He sat squarely in the driver's seat and completely dictated the terms of his exit.
According to his agent, Alexander Chernykh, the superstar simply prioritized his wife and children above everything else. "He considered what was best for his family and children, and then for himself," Chernykh stated.
Based on those strict criteria, Southern California emerged as the absolute best option. "The climate, the environment, and the daily life," his agent explained, couldn't be matched elsewhere.
Panarin has been playing in the NHL for a long time and has plenty to compare it to. Los Angeles offered a sunny sanctuary away from the relentless East Coast grind.
Family First, Hockey Second
Chernykh made it perfectly clear that better offers were sitting on the table. Other franchises offered significantly more in terms of both raw money and contract length.
Over his NHL career, Panarin has already banked serious cash. He ultimately settled for a two-year, $22 million extension with the Kings.
At $11 million annually, it's certainly not a steep discount. But he absolutely could've squeezed more term out of a desperate Eastern Conference contender.
Playoff guarantees ultimately meant nothing to the veteran forward. As his camp openly noted, the brutal postseason tournament is always a total unknown.
You can chase a Stanley Cup ring and end up being held scoreless in the opening round. "We ultimately don't know where any team will go in the playoffs," Chernykh noted.
Instead, he chose off-ice stability for his kids. The warm weather won out, and he brings crisp passing and elite skill to a fresh locker room.
Now, the mandate immediately shifts back to the rink. His high-end offensive output and precise transition game will heavily dictate if the Kings make a deep run this spring.
"He has a two-year contract, and with his help, Los Angeles could still make the fans happy," Chernykh said. The pressure is on, and the next puck drop is approaching.
