The Detroit Red Wings have made a surprising trade, sending one of their goaltenders to the Anaheim Ducks this evening.
The Detroit Red Wings have begun to make moves ahead of the trade deadline next month.
The team currently holds a tenuous grasp on the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with 64 points through 57 games.
The Ottawa Senators and Columbus Blue Jackets and Boston Bruins are all right on their heels with 62, 62, and 61 points, respectively.
It appears as though Steve Yzerman is going to be aggressive this year though, as he just made a major move to free up cap space heading into the deadline.
He delt veteran goaltender
Ville Husso to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for future considerations.
Husso has appeared in just 9 games for Detroit this season, posting a 1-5-2 record, an .866 save percentage, and a 3.69 goals-against-average.
Obviously, those numbers are not good enough for a playoff team, even as a backup.
Furthermore, Husso carries a cap hit of 3.6 million dollars, which is expensive for a backup, let alone one of the worst in the league.
For the Ducks, this move is rather inconsequential as the team likely will not be making the playoffs this year.
However, it is odd that the team could not get a draft pick as compensation for taking on the remainder of his contract.
Husso has 141 games of NHL experience, posting a career record of 70-45-18, a save percentage of .901 and a GAA of 3.05.
