It seemed like it was only a matter of time before we heard something from the team, and now we have it. Following massive backlash from fans after an announcement on Dillon Dube, the Calgary Flames issued a news release offering some clarity.
Dube is one of five players from Team Canada at the 2018 World Junior Hockey championships who have been asked to surrender to police in London, Ont., in connection with an investigation into an assault. However, when the Flames initially announced his leave of absence on Jan. 21, the team said he was taking time away to work on his mental health.
When it was confirmed today that Dube was one of the five players linked to the investigation, fans were furious with the wording of the previous announcement, with many accusing the Flames of trying to cover for Dube. Calgary's head office has now issued a statement saying they were never made aware of any potential charges before Dube left.
I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see the league get involved in what is going on here. If Dube used this reason in order to cover for himself, it's not a great look. If the Flames aren't telling the truth, that's also a major issue.
