During the second intermission of Saturday's game between the Dallas Stars and Vegas Golden Knights, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman shared an update on the Calgary Flames' search for a new head coach.

Friedman said that the Flames plan on giving three internal candidates a legit chance for the head coaching role.

"The word is from some of the people is that they do plan on giving legit chances to their 3 internal candidates, Ryan Huska, Kirk Muller, who I believe has interviewed with a couple of other teams, and also Mitch Love, the 2-time AHL COTY." Friedman said.

Huska, 47, has been with the Flames organization since 2014, joining their AHL affiliate as their head coach. In 2018 he was promoted to the Flames to be an assistant coach. As for Muller, he's been with the Flames since 2021 as an assistant coach after being fired by the Montreal Canadiens earlier that year.

Mitch Love is an interesting candidate for the Calgary Flames. He was hired by them to be the head coach of their AHL affiliate in 2021 and in his first two seasons, he's won back-to-back AHL Coach of the Year awards.

While the three mentioned above will all get legit chances to be the Flames' next head coach, the organization is still looking at their external options. It's expected that the Flames will have their next head coach in place ahead of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft.
