Carolina Hurricanes expected to let Jesse Puljujarvi walk as a free agent after disappointing playoffs
The Carolina Hurricanes took a risk on Jesse Puljujarvi when they acquired him from the Edmonton Oilers. The former 4th overall pick was acquired by the Hurricanes on February 28th in exchange for Patrik Puistola. The Hurricanes hoped that a fresh start Puljujarvi could find his game and become an effective NHLer.
After being acquired from the Oilers, Puljujarvi played in 17 regular season games. In those 17 games he didn't register a goal and only added 2 assists. During the playoffs Puljujarvi became so ineffective he became a healthy scratch in 8 of 15 playoff games.
Now according to Frank Seravalli it appears Puljujarvi is a leading candidate to NOT receive a qualifying offer. Puljujarvi is due a qualifying offer of $3,000,000 which for the Hurricanes could be way too rich for their blood.
It was a worthy gamble for the Hurricanes, acquiring Puljujarvi for next to nothing, to see if he could find magic with some fellow Finns. It didn't work out. He didn't score a single goal in 24 total games and was a healthy scratch for eight of Carolina's 15 playoff contests.
Along with Jesse Puljujarvi, it is expected New Jersey will consider non-tendering Mackenzie Blackwell as well. The date for qualifying offers to be submitted to restricted free agents is June 30th, by 5 pm.
