12-year NHL veteran decides to leave North America
After being released from his professional tryout contract (PTO) by the Dallas Stars just before the start of the 2023-24 season, it was uncertain what would come next for longtime NHL defenceman Jordie Benn.
But on Saturday, Jordie Benn's next destination has been revealed. The 36-year-old has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Swedish club Brynas IF, who play in the second division, HockeyAllsvenskan.
The following was translated from Swedish
"This feels very exciting, a wonderful challenge for me and now the timing was right. Alcén has already given me a good picture of the club since the first contact. I come here with enormous energy for the mission." Benn said.
He added, "I am incredibly proud to have the chance to represent such a long-established association as Brynas IF and I also like the club's clear goal to get back to the SHL, that journey triggers me."
Brynas IF say that it's uncertain when Jordie Benn will make his debut with the team due to the paperwork that's needed to be done in order to get him on the ice.
The Victoria, British Columbia native played for the Toronto Maple Leafs and their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, during the 2022-23 season. In 12 games with the Maple Leafs, Benn had two points (one goal, one assist), while in 23 games with the Marlies, he tallied six points.
