Moritz Seider ejected for dirty hit in Germany's quarter-final game at World Championship
The quarter-finals got underway at the 2023 IIHF World Hockey Championship on Thursday and one of the first games of the day saw the first place team in Group B, Switzerland, take on the fourth place team in Group A, Germany.
During the second period of the game, Detroit Red Wings defenceman
Moritz Seider was ejected following a dirty hit from behind on Switzerland forward Gaetan Haas.
Haas had the puck deep in Germany's zone when Seider comes in and hits him right on the numbers from behind and into the boards. Haas was slow to get up and went to the bench, but remained in the game.
The officials called a five-minute major and a game misconduct on the play, but as with any major penalty at the World Championship, they decided to review it to make sure they got the right call. After the review, the call on the ice was upheld and Seider was ejected from the game.
If Germany advances to the semi-finals on Saturday, it will be interesting to see if Seider will be in the lineup or if the IIHF Disciplinary Panel will decide to suspended him for at least one game.
