The Edmonton Oilers look care of a big piece of business on Tuesday, as they announced the signing of Leon Draisaitl to an eight-year contract extension starting in 2025-26. Draisaitl's next contract comes with a cap hit of $14 million per season and over 90 percent of the deal is made up of signing bonuses.
With Leon Draisaitl now under contract for the next nine years, the Oilers can now turn their attention to next summer when captain Connor McDavid becomes eligible to sign an extension with the organization. Currently, McDavid is earning $12.5 million per season, but will definitely see a big bump in pay starting in the 2026-27 season.
Locking up Leon Draisaitl to an eight-year extension also helps the Oilers' chances of re-signing Connor McDavid on a long-term basis. It's hard to see McDavid ever leave the Edmonton Oilers and one insider believes that to be the case as well.
While on 'Oilers Now' on 630CHED in Edmonton, Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli all but confirmed that Connor McDavid will re-sign with the Oilers, with the earliest date that can be made official being July 1st, 2025.
The superstar duo of Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid will look to get the Oilers back to the Stanley Cup Final in 2024-25 and hope to bring a championship back to Edmonton for the first time since 1990. With the duo likely in Edmonton for almost the next decade, there's a good chance winning a Stanley Cup becomes reality at some point.
