There's some big name free agents available in the NHL, and if the New York Rangers can't land any of them, Elliotte Friedman has revealed Plan B for Chris Drury.
NHL free agency begins on July 1st, and with so many teams looking to improve is what has been predicted to be a chaotic off-season, free agency is going to be full of surprises.
One thing that won't be a surprise is that the New York Rangers will be aggressive in trying to find upgrade throughout their team, and after trading Chris Kreider this past week, it's safe to say that they're loaded with more money and ready to spend.
Unsurprisingly, they'll be looking to target Mitch Marner, Nikolaj Ehlers and Sam Bennett, but in case they miss on all three (which is a major possibility), Elliotte Friedman has revealed what their backup plan will be.
According to Friedman, if they miss out on the top names available, the Rangers will pivot towards handing out offer sheets, with the likes of JJ Peterka, Marco Rossi and Matthew Knies likely right at the top of their list.
What Friedman didn't talk about was the potential of New York looking at other top free agents like John Tavares, Brad Marchand, Brock Boeser, Claude Giroux or other names available, as it would make sense they look to land veterans to help lead this team, but after last summer, offer sheets are set to be hot in 2025.
Whether or not they actually land any of their offer sheet targets, only time will tell, but for now it's a good backup plan to have for New York, and whether they want to get younger or more veterans up front, there are plenty of options to choose from.
