New York Rangers Failed PTO Signing Looks To Keep NHL Career Alive With Western Conference Team

Adam Erne played with the New York Rangers last year on a professional tryout. He'd only play well enough to earn a tryout contract with the AHL's Hartford Wolfpack. After ten games, he'd suffer a lower-body injury and would be released from his tryout in November. Now he looks to revive his career with the Dallas Stars.
According to a recent report, the Dallas Stars have signed Adam Erne to a
professional tryout today. This year will mark the third year he has attended an NHL training camp on a tryout basis rather than signing a contract during free agency.
Erne's career consisted of bottom-six play in the NHL as a checking forward for the past eight seasons. He started his career in Tampa Bay with the Lightning, scoring 20 points in 65 games in 2018-19.
Instead of paying him, they'd trade his rights to the Detroit Red Wings, where he'd spend the next four years in the league, including his career high year of 31 points (11-20) in 45 games with the shortened season in 2020-21.
Adam Erne's Rocky Road to A NHL Deal
After the 2022-23 season, he'd be placed on waivers
Initially, it was puzzling to see the lack of interest in Erne on the open market in 2023. His waiver clearance could have been chalked up to his previous $2.1MM cap hit, but he still looked like an effective NHLer with 18 points in 61 games for the lowly Wings while averaging 13:23 per game and laying 161 hits.
He'd sign a
professional tryout contract with the Oilers and would be successful, signing a two-way deal with the team in 2023-24. He'd only score two points in 24 games with the Western Conference team, and it wouldn't be long before Erne would find himself on waivers again and would spend the season in the AHL.
Once again, he'd show up to another NHL team's camp on a tryout basis, this time for the Rangers, where he'd manage to find himself on another tryout contract with the Hartford Wolfpack.
He'd score a point (1 A) and would be
released from his tryout contract after ten games, after suffering a lower-body injury. Tough break for someone counting on trying to find a real job in the minors.
Erne will have to convince Jim Nill that he's worthy of a two-way deal or a minor league contract, as the Stars' lineup is full of great depth.
He'll be competing with other young prospects like Cross Hanas, a former Grand Rapids Griffin player, for a spot in the lineup.
Given that Hanas is a Dallas native, the odds may be stacked against him.
