Washington Capitals defenseman Rasmus Sandin accidentally became an Insider for Fabian Zetterlund, informing him of his trade before Sharks GM Mike Grier could.
The 2025 Trade Deadline was a busy one - but one particular NHL general manager wasn't the first to inform one of his players of an impending deal.
Among the moves being made was the Ottawa Senators trading for Fabian Zetterlund from the San Jose Sharks as well as with Tristen Robins and a 2025 4th round pick, in exchange for forward Noah Gregor, forward Zack Ostapchuk, and a 2025 2nd round pick.
Sandin explained that he was the 1st to inform Zetterlund that he was on the move from San Jose, and it took place immediately after
He was asking me back, 'Who got traded?' And I said, 'You're getting traded.'
And he started like, 'That's funny.' [I said] 'No, you're getting traded'.
[He was like] Where? And I just said you're going to Ottawa. And he's like, 'Yeah, right.' Then, right after that, Grier called him, so he had to pick that up.
Fabian, I've known for a long time. Fabian was I knew him first. I want to say I think the first time we met was maybe 10 years ago or something like that. William was not recently, but a couple of years, maybe three, four years ago. I built a strong connection right away. Fun two guys, for sure.
He said he was going to call me back, but he didn't call me back until the day after. I was going to a game too. That was a different conversation, for sure.
Zetterlund has played in 3 games with the Senators since the trade, but has no points. While with the Sharks this year, he had 36 points (17G, 19A) in 64 games.
He can become a restricted free agent at the end of the year.
