Despite being out of the lineup for the last month and being placed on long-term injured reserve, the Pittsburgh Penguins were hoping to move Jake Guentzel very quickly. At one time there were at least six teams in the mix for Guentzel including the New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks.
It was reported by Andy Strickland, Jake Guentzel is expected to be traded as a rental and a contract extension with the acquiring team won't be in place prior to the move being completed.
"Jake Guentzel likely to be a rental when traded. Doesn't sound like an extension will be in place prior."
Prior to the injury, the 29-year-old was playing very well for the Penguins, recording his seventh-straight 20+ goal season and is slightly above a point-per-game this year. In 50 games, the Omaha native has 52 points (22 goals, 30 assists), 14 penalty minutes and is a plus-nine.
This is a huge get for the Hurricanes who don't normally make moves to add rentals.
