Player narrowly avoids serious injury after having visor broken by the puck
Like many progressive rule changes in sports and especially in hockey, safety has become front and center in the last decade or so. With that, the topic of face shields/visors instituted into the National Hockey League is still a hot-button topic to this day even though visors became mandatory for players entering the league in 2013.
Today, almost ten years later
Robert Thomas of the St Louis Blues is probably thanking his lucky stars that he's required to wear one.
Thomas, who was skating through the neutral zone Thursday night against the San Jose Sharks, took a deflected puck to the face which cracked his visor consequently splitting it into two separate pieces.
While Thomas appeared to be injured on the play, he returned for the third period.
The 20th overall pick in the 2017 National Hockey League Entry Draft has skated in 300 games for the Blues contributing 57 goals, 159 assists, for 216 points along with 78 penalty minutes.
