If this season has proven anything, it is that the Toronto Maple Leafs need a right-handed puck-moving defenseman, and the New Jersey Devils have just that.
With the Toronto Maple Leafs dealing with a few injuries to their defensive core, it has become clear as day that they need a lot of help going forward.
When it comes to right-handed defensman, they don't really have anyone with offensive cache. As a result, there has been this sense that the Leafs are seeking a big trade.
Luckily for them, a right-handed puck-moving defenseman has found himself on the trading block. According to Kevin Weekes, that defenseman is none other than Dougie Hamilton.
Hamilton has been connected to the Toronto Maple Leafs since the Summer. With the Leafs looking to trade Morgan Rielly, the Leafs could certainly make the cap hit work.
The Devils defenseman currently makes $9 million per season, and he is in the fifth year of his seven-year deal. It's an expensive deal, but one the Leafs could benefit from.
Of course, the Leafs would have to weigh some of the pros and cons here. For instance, Hamilton is around the same age as Rielly, and is currently in the midst of one of his worst seasons.
Dougie Hamilton struggling with the New Jersey Devils
In 29 games this season, Dougie Hamilton has just eight points, which is a far cry from the pace we saw a few seasons ago when he finished the year with 74 points.
However, Hamilton has been involved in trade rumors, and with the Quinn Hughes situation taking its toll, it is easy to see why Hamilton may have dropped off.
Either way, the defenseman would be a good fit in Toronto, as he fits all of the team's needs. The offense could stand to gain from a puck-moving defenseman on the right side of the ice. It would improve the power play, and even five-on-five play would be much improved.
While it would take quite a few assets to make a deal, Hamilton's play this season has dropped his value, which is a good thing for the Leafs.
