Dreger went on to mention that he doesn't expect the Maple Leafs to hire another first-time General Manager. So the assumption is that someone with experience, such as Brad Treliving, would be at the top of Brendan Shanahan's list.
Treliving, 53, and the Flames parted ways just over a month ago after spending nine seasons as their General Manager, five seasons in which they made the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Treliving's deteriorating relationship with Darryl Sutter was reportedly part of the reason for his departure, according to Elliotte Friedman. Two weeks after Treliving left the Flames, the organization decided to fire Darryl Sutter.
The Maple Leafs are going to do their due diligence on the open market to see what options are available to them, but it's hard to imagine a scenario where Brad Treliving isn't a top target for the Brendan Shanahan and MLSE.
