Sheldon Keefe makes strange comment about who decided to put emergency backup goalie into the game
Last night the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Montreal Canadiens 7-1 in their finally meeting of the season. The end the game the Maple Leafs made the decision to remove Ilya Samsonov from the game and insert emergency backup goalie, Jett Alexander as replacement. The move was meant to thank Alexander and make his dreams come true of playing in the NHL..
This was a move that the Edmonton Oilers used earlier this year to honour Matt Berlin, a University of Alberta goalie who was an emergency backup during their game. The Oilers decision was reportedly sparked by Connor McDavid approaching the coaching staff and initiating the move. After the Leafs game reporters wanted to know from Head Coach Sheldon Keefe, who made the decision. According to Keefe the decision of wasn't his and it reportedly came down from upstairs.
It's strange that Keefe would admit that this decision was not his. Later John Tavares also said this wasn't something that came from the players. It's clear that this decision came down from the team's management and definitely makes you think about what is going on behind the scenes in Toronto.
