The verdict is in. The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a decision on what to do with one of their best prospects for the remainder of the 2023-24 season.
The team has announced that 19-year-old forward Fraser Minten is headed back to the Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League.
Minten was not at all expected to start the season in the NHL, but impressed the coaching staff enough in the preseason that he was given the opportunity at some games. He played four before today's announcement, failing to get on the scoresheet. However, the experience is invaluable, and he goes back to the WHL with more hockey knowledge than ever.
Minten was drafted in the second round, 38th overall, in 2022. Because he's under 20 and from Canada, he is not yet eligible to play in the American Hockey League (AHL). Playing 10 games with the Maple Leafs this season would have burned off one year of his three-year NHL entry-level contract.
