Auston Matthews is back at the center of Toronto chaos, and Craig Berube now has a trade storm hanging over everything around the Maple Leafs.

A fresh proposal that surfaced Friday has fans stunned because it doesn't just float the idea of moving Matthews. It lays out a full rebuild-style swing that would send the franchise face to the Philadelphia Flyers.
The framework making the rounds is simple and massive. Toronto would move Matthews with 25% salary retention and include goaltender Joseph Woll in the deal.
In return, the Maple Leafs would land either Owen Tippett or Trevor Zegras, plus Jett Luchanko, Oliver Bonk, Toronto's 2027 first-round pick, and a 2028 third-rounder if Matthews re-signs.
That's the kind of package that instantly splits a fan base. One side sees a front-office fever dream. The other sees a brutal but logical reset if Toronto starts worrying about Matthews' durability and long-term direction.
That's why this idea hit so hard online. Matthews is still Matthews, but the pitch here is that Toronto could cash out before the risk climbs even higher.
It also isn't just about futures. Tippett or Zegras would give Toronto an NHL forward right away, while Luchanko and Bonk would hand the organization two young pieces to build around.

Why this proposal has fans rattled

The real jolt is what it says about the state of the Maple Leafs. A team built to chase a Cup suddenly gets framed as one that may need to reload the whole room if this spring goes sideways.
The article behind the proposal leans hard into Matthews' injury history, calling this his second major injury this year. That's the pressure point driving the entire conversation.
Then there's Woll. Including him raises the stakes because moving your star center is one thing. Shipping out a goalie at the same time makes it feel less like a hockey trade and more like a franchise pivot.
Financially, the proposal argues Toronto would retain $3.3 million through 2028, a number meant to make the cap side feel workable instead of reckless.
But the shock value comes from one basic truth: teams do not move players like Auston Matthews unless they believe the whole window is changing. That's why fans aren't treating this like ordinary trade talk.
Right now it's still a proposal, not a transaction. But once a package this big lands in public, the noise around the Maple Leafs gets louder in a hurry.
