Brandon Carlo Reveals How Close Brad Marchand Was to Signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs
Brad Marchand re-signed with the Florida Panthers this Summer, although a conversation with Brandon Carlo could have brought the future Hall of Famer to Toronto.
During free agency, there were numerous Toronto Maple Leafs fans out there who were holding out hope that the team would sign Brad Marchand.
Overall, he is one of the most beloved players in the history of the Boston Bruins. At the trade deadline, he was sent to the Florida Panthers, where he won his second Stanley Cup.
It seemed as though the Panthers would have to lose some players due to salary cap pressures. The Maple Leafs were looking to take full advantage. Unfortunately, that didn't happen.
The Panthers convinced their stars to take less money, while Marchand signed a suspicious six-year deal that will see him retire when he is 43.
Brandon Carlo tried to convince Brad Marchand
Recently, former Boston Bruins defenseman and current Leafs star, Brandon Carlo, spoke to Luke Fox about Marchand's free agency.
It was here that he revealed how Marchand was actually very close to coming to Toronto. They even had a conversation about it. Unfortunately, the Leafs just couldn't close the deal.
I had talked to him, and there had been conversations there, and I felt like he definitely had that interest to come here. Ultimately, it didn't end up that way. But that would have been fantastic. Now we're just gonna have to compete against him and hopefully beat him here soon.
Ultimately, Marchand would have been amazing for the Maple Leafs, but it is understandable why he decided to go in a different direction.
At the end of the day, the Florida Panthers have a chance to win three straight Stanley Cups. It is hard to convince a guy to leave that situation.
Hopefully, this is the year where Marchand finally fails at getting the best of the Maple Leafs.
