Easton Cowan's NHL Hopes Take a Huge Hit at Rookie Tournament

Easton Cowan is one of the most exciting prospects on the Toronto Maple Leafs, although there is no telling whether or not the kid actually has NHL potential.

While he is likely to make the team eventually, he still has a lot of developing to do, and this season will be the perfect opportunity for him to get some pro reps.

The expectation is that he will start the season with the Toronto Marlies. That hasn't stopped some fans from hoping for a miracle. For instance, some are convinced that Cowan will not just make the Leafs in his first season, but he will play on the top line as well.

Today, Cowan got to play against the Ottawa Senators in the annual Rookie Tournament. Unfortunately, his play left a lot to be desired.

According to reporter Kevin Papetti, Cowan didn't show much promise, and it seems pretty clear that he will be relegated to the AHL to start the season.

Cowan is playing against other rookies and junior players. If he were NHL-ready, he would be head and shoulders above the competition. So far, that has not been the case.

Of course, it is very early in training camp. Tomorrow, the Maple Leafs play again, this time against the Montreal Canadiens.

This is going to be a very interesting matchup, and we're sure Leafs Nation will be tuning in.

As for Easton Cowan, we are excited to see more of him as training camp goes forward. Hopefully, this performance is just a blip on the radar.
