David Kampf is set to have his contract terminated at 2 PM later today, and Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman has the scoop on the likeliest outcome.
Toronto Maple Leafs forward David Kampf was put on waivers on Thursday with the intention of terminating his contract once he finally clears.
It is expected that as of 2 PM, the Leafs and Kampf will get their wish, which makes the forward an unrestricted free agent who can sign with whomever he wishes.
Of course, these decisions are not going to be very easy for the forward. There is a lot to consider, and there are plenty of teams who would be interested in his services.
However, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, there are three teams, in particular, who appear to be finalists in the David Kampf sweepstakes.
Who will David Kampf sign with?
Those three teams are the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Montreal Canadiens, and the Vancouver Canucks. In fact, the Canadiens have frequently been named as potential trade partners for the Leafs.
A trade is out of the question now, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. In the end, the Maple Leafs are going to get the cap relief they are so desperate for.
At the end of the day, Kampf wasn't getting any playing time in Toronto, and he didn't like being with the franchise anymore. It's okay to let him go.
That said, the Maple Leafs have much bigger problems right now. The Leafs are currently in seventh place in the Atlantic Division and have lost four games in a row.
There is no telling whether or not this team actually has what it takes to make the postseason. They can't get a win, and their overall play has just been awful.
Only time will tell whether or not the Maple Leafs can finally get themselves back to where they need to be, or if this is going to end in tears.
