Kris Knoblauch desperately needs blueline help, and there are two primary trade targets that the Edmonton Oilers are zeroing in on.
Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli dropped a massive update ahead of the upcoming trade deadline. The Oilers are aggressively working the phones.
Edmonton has definitively narrowed their focus to two elite targets to reinforce the right side of their defense. They want proven veterans like Justin Faulk, according to Seravalli.
Faulk stands out as someone who could really help the Oilers' blueline, but he's not the only piece the team is eyeing.
Oliver Ekman-Larsson joins Faulk on that very exclusive shortlist. General manager Stan Bowman is clearly swinging for the fences this spring.
Both defensemen bring exactly what the front office is looking for right now. Their skating and mobility remain absolutely top-tier.
Seravalli noted that their ability to confidently play the right side makes them incredibly valuable.
Finding defensemen who can log heavy minutes on the penalty kill and easily slide over to their off-side is notoriously difficult. That's why OEL stands out.
The Perfect Fit For A Cup Run
When it comes to Faulk, he carries a $6.5 million cap hit and brings a heavy shot to the power play. He consistently delivers solid execution in his own zone.
Over his NHL career, Faulk has proven he can handle high-pressure assignments. He rarely posts a -3 rating or gets held scoreless on a long homestand.
Ekman-Larsson offers a different flavor at a very manageable $3.5 million cap hit. He drives the transition game with crisp passing out of the corners.
The Oilers desperately need defensemen who can get the puck to Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl quickly. Both guys provide immediate offensive output from the back end.
Neither player will come cheap on the open trade market. Rival contenders will inevitably drive up the asking price as the deadline rapidly approaches.
Edmonton has the cap gymnastics to make a blockbuster deal work. But they will undoubtedly have to move some salary out before the puck drops on a trade.
Bringing in either guy transforms the locker room instantly. It gives the Oilers the exact defensive depth required to survive a grueling postseason schedule.
Expect Bowman to relentlessly pursue both options over the coming days. Edmonton is built to win right now, and the clock is officially ticking.
