Gary Bettman is in Milan for the Olympic Games, and during the press conference, he made an announcement that is not great for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
NHL fans know that the league needs a bit of an overhaul when it comes to the points system for the standings. As it stands, a win, regardless of whether it comes in regulation or overtime, is worth two points. Meanwhile, a loss in overtime is one point, and a loss in regulation is zero.
However, fans have been begging for a change. For instance, the international model is something that the community has been begging for.
In this scenario, you get three points for a regulation win. A win in overtime and a shootout gets you two points. From there, one point for an overtime loss and zero for losing in regulation.
This would fix some major problems. While it would inflate point totals, it would create a world in which the points are more equitable.
Gary Bettman dismisses playoff changes
Luke Fox of Sportsnet asked Gary Bettman about this potential change today, as the commissioner was in Milan to take in the Olympics.
This led to a pretty surprising answer from Bettman, who said it isn't even a consideration right about now.
We like what we have. … We’re not in search of a problem to fix.
For some fans out there, this is a bit of a surprising admission when you really think about it. You would think the NHL would be more open to making changes.
Bettman is likely to retire very soon. As a result, we could see some major changes from future commissioners, with the point system being at the top of the list.
Whatever the case may be, the NHL could use an evolutionary change, and the points system is a great place to start.
