Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Chris Tanev is currently in the midst of a difficult season full of concussions, and it's hard to say if he is going to return.
Chris Tanev is a player who means a lot to the Toronto Maple Leafs, as he has been an anchor of the blue line over the past season.
Unfortunately, Tanev has only played eight games throughout the 2025-26 campaign, with injuries keeping him from reaching his peak powers.
The defenseman has been out for over a month, and while he is currently with the team on their road trip, there is no date in sight for his return.
In fact, a recent update from head coach Craig Berube isn't exactly eliciting confidence that the defenseman will be back, anytime soon.
Craig Berube with some disappointing Chris Tanev news
While speaking to reporters, Berube made the point that Tanev is progressing, but he has to talk to his doctors to figure out when he can return.
He's progressing. He feels good on the ice. But there's still decisions that have to be made with him personally and doctors. OK, that's it.
Given his age and his concussion history, it wouldn't be shocking if the defenseman shut himself down for the entire season.
If he comes back and gets another concussion, he could face severe long-term consequences. That would be terrible for everyone involved.
Some tough decisions are about to be made, and if Tanev shuts himself down, then this Leafs season will only get more difficult.
All Leafs fans can do is wish him the best, and hope that everything works out.
