Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews clearly was not right this season, and during the team's end-of-season press conference today, he admitted as such.

Auston Matthews is one of the best players in the entire NHL; however, this season, he simply was not on the level we are typically used to.
With 33 goals in 67 games, Matthews was well below his 69-goal pace from last season. This continuously led to questions about his health and whether or not his nagging injury was keeping him from scoring goals.
During the postseason, the captain's scoring woes continued. Whenever he was asked about his injury, he would avoid the question and refuse to make excuses.

Today, however, Matthews changed his tune. While speaking to reporters, he admitted that he was injured this season and that it affected him in a lot of ways.
While he would not go into specifics, he did reveal that he got injured during training camp, and it never went away. Even after missing stretches of games, he still had to deal with it.
«I don't want to get into the specifics, but it was a tough year. I'm confident that with some time off, I'll be back to 100% next season.»
Luckily, the superstar forward believes that he will be 100 percent ready to go by next season. Fans are hopeful that he is telling the truth on this one.
Overall, Matthews is extremely important to this team, and they need him healthy in order to win games and have a shot in the postseason.
Moreover, if the Leafs do get rid of Mitch Marner and John Tavares, Matthews will become that much more important.
Only time will tell whether or not this Leafs team can make big moves in the offseason and build a team that is actually made for the playoffs.
