Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews was asked about the playoffs last night following what was a horrific loss to the Buffalo Sabres.
Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs are in the depths of the Atlantic Division right now, and it feels like the team is just in major trouble.
The Leafs lost again last night, this time to the Buffalo Sabres in what was an uninspired 7-4 romp on home ice.
Now, the Leafs remain eight points out of a Wild Card spot, and with a four-game road trip coming up, the fans are not terribly excited.
Despite this, the captain isn't feeling too bad about the team's predicament, which has led to some genuine confusion from fans of the team.
Auston Matthews on the Playoff race
After the loss to the Sabres, Matthews was asked about the playoffs and whether or not they are still a realistic goal for the team.
That is when Matthews surprised fans and the media by stating that, despite the odds, there is still quite a bit of belief within the team.
I think the belief's there. We can't look any further than what's in front of us. Tonight's over and it's obviously frustrating, but we can't look ahead at the schedule. It's about the next game against Seattle.
That is a tough pill to swallow right now, especially when you consider how the Maple Leafs are so far out of the race and practically have no real shot.
It feels like a tone deaf statement. That is especially so when the Leafs aren't playing with any sort of passion or gumption.
At this point, the fans have every right to complain, and there is no telling when this is all going to come together.
