NHL insider Chris Johnston was recently asked about Auston Matthews' future with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and it led to a truly fascinating answer.
Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs have had a difficult season, and it feels like things only get worse with each game.
For instance, last night, Matthews had a goal and two assists, yet they still lost by a score of 7-4 against the Buffalo Sabres in what was a must-win game.
Now, the Leafs are in big trouble, and the fans are starting to feel as though there is no way that the team will make it to the postseason.
With that in mind, pundits are being asked about Matthews' future in Toronto, and whether or not he wants to stick around going forward.
What's next for Auston Matthews?
According to Chris Johnston of TSN and The Athletic, there is no going on between Matthews and the Leafs to suggest a divorce is coming.
Johnston believes all indications show that Matthews is happy with where he is, and is very unlikely to change teams right now.
The core four has not been able to accomplish anything in the postseason, which has to be a consideration for general manager Brad Treliving.
While that is certainly true, you have to wonder what the Leafs must be thinking right now, especially with the Olympic break on the horizon.
It feels as though the playoffs are not in the cards, and will Matthews really be okay with that? You would have to assume the answer to that is "no."
