Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews has dealt with injury issues over the past couple of years, and this past week, the forward revealed the truth.
Auston Matthews played 67 games last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs, as he was dealing with a lingering issue during the first half of the campaign.
When Matthews returned to the lineup, it felt as though the issue was still there. He wasn't shooting the puck like he used to, and only managed 33 goals.
While speaking to The Athletic, Auston Matthews offered up an interesting perspective on his health and why things have been difficult.
He even admitted that he had a hard time coming back from his injury just last week. The captain reveals he didn't "feel amazing," although now he is feeling better.
Certainly, the first couple sessions back on the ice (following the injury) it didn't feel amazing. I think even the last couple games, I feel like I've got good legs and I'm generating some good opportunities. I feel good about my game.
Matthews is currently on a four-game point streak, which is certainly encouraging for the fans. In Matthews's eyes, it just shows that he is getting back to the level fans know him for.
I think I'm getting there. I'd certainly like to do more and certainly would like to get to another level. But I think it's turning in the right direction. In the end, I want to produce, I want to score and do all those things. But that doesn't matter if we're not winning. You're still not leaving the rink happy. I feel like I'm trending in the right direction and continue to take those steps
Tonight, the Toronto Maple Leafs play the Montreal Canadiens in Toronto, and all eyes will be on Matthews and whether or not he can carry his team.
As captain of the team, the expectation is that he will lead and get this team where it needs to be. A win tonight would do wonders.
