Maple Leafs begin trade discussions surrounding 27-year-old defenseman

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has his work cut out for him ahead of the NHL trade deadline, and he has a defenseman on his mind.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are going to be sellers at the NHL trade deadline, and fans have already decided that this is something they are okay with.
At the end of the day, this has not been a good season for the Maple Leafs, and something needed to change in order for the team to be successful in the future.
Guys like Bobby McMann are expected to be traded, and a deal could happen as soon as tomorrow if teams want to play ball.
However, there are other guys on the market as well, including a few surprises. One of those surprises is none other than Simon Benoit.
Simon Benoit is trade bait
According to Chris Johnston, the Toronto Maple Leafs are shopping Benoit right now, and are very interested in making a move involving the defenseman.
The 27-year-old defenseman has some value, and there are plenty of teams who could use him for an injection of depth.
It wasn't only in the last few days that they started to poke around and see, hey would you take a Simon Benoit, what would you pay; I think those conversations actually go back quite a ways
The next month is going to be fascinating for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and we are excited to see how this all plays out for the team.
Treliving has a lot on his plate right now, and trading a guy like Benoit is not going to be an easy move for him to make.
That said, now is the time to act. Whether or not the Leafs have the guts could very well determine whether or not the retool is successful.
