Earlier today, the San Jose Sharks put a defenseman on waivers, and this could be the moment for the Toronto Maple Leafs to make something happen.
San Jose Sharks defenseman Nick Leddy has been struggling this season. At a salary of $4 million per season, he simply is not carrying his weight for this young squad.
This is his first season with the team, and with a -9 rating, as well as four points in 19 games, it does feel as though the Sharks are not happy with what they are seeing.
In fact, today, the Sharks took some action against Leddy, as he was immediately put on waivers as soon as 2 PM hit.
With that in mind, an opportunity has opened up for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are dealing with multiple defensive injuries.
Nick Leddy is an option for the Maple Leafs
Chris Tanev is out until the end of the season, while Simon Benoit is currently day-to-day. With that in mind, the Leafs need some relief.
While their preference is for a right-handed puck-moving defenseman, Leddy could certainly be an option.
Troy Stecher was a huge success for the Maple Leafs, and Leddy could certainly be someone who fits that bill, going forward.
Of course, there is no guarantee this is the case. Not to mention, Leddy isn't a right-handed defenseman, which puts him at a disadvantage.
Not to mention, the salary is a bit steep. However, if GM Brad Treliving feels desperate enough, this is certainly an option.
Tomorrow, we will have a clearer view on what the Toronto Maple Leafs are hoping to do with this potential opportunity.
