The Toronto Maple Leafs need William Nylander to step up in this series, but after a bizarre error, they almost lost him for a crucial Game 6 in Ottawa.
After building a 3-0 lead in their series with the Ottawa Senators, the Toronto Maple Leafs have lost back-to-back games, and now find themselves in a must-win Game 6 to avoid a winner-take-all Game 7 back in Toronto.
Before the game however, the team submitted their roster report for the game, with one tiny error, as they had mixed up the Nylander's, listing William as a healthy scratch while having his brother Alex in the lineup for the game.
Thankfully for Toronto, rule 5.1 in the NHL's rulebook stipulates that if an official notices a player is in uniform and on the ice but not listed on the official report, they'll bring it to the attention of the team, so moments before the game began, they managed to change things up and get William on the active roster.
While explaining all of this on Sportsnet, top NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman summed this situation up in very simply terms for Toronto:
It could have been disastrous for Toronto.
That's a major understatement, as the team would have lost their second leading scorer behind
Mitch Marner in this series due to a simple error with the roster report, but thankfully, the rule stipulates that an official can bring it to the attention of the team as they rectified their mistake.
Now, all is well for Toronto as they look to avoid losing their third straight game as they try to put this series away and move on to the second round where their rival Florida Panthers will be waiting for them.
