Mitch Marner's Agent is Up to His Old Tricks, But Now It's Affecting a Star Defenseman
Darren Ferris is the agent for Mitch Marner, and Toronto Maple Leafs fans know him well. Now, Ferris represents Bowen Byram, and it's not good for the Buffalo Sabres.
Mitch Marner and his agent Darren Ferris always made things difficult for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Contract negotiations were always a pain, and it never felt like the forward wanted to dedicate his life to the franchise.
Now, another team is dealing with the wrath of Ferris and one of his skilled clients. Of course, we are talking about defenseman Bowen Byram and the Buffalo Sabres.
Byram is a restricted free agent who has been embroiled in trade talks as of late. There has been a sense that Ferris is pushing for the Sabres to trade him, but those trade talks simply aren't working.
Bowen Byram makes it tough for the Buffalo Sabres
Yesterday, a major development happened as Byram was hoping for an offer sheet. Teams were threatening to do it, much to the delight of the defenseman and his representation. He even refused to file for arbitration.
However, the Sabres ended up filing for arbitration, which means Byram can now select his term, while the Sabres will have to wait for the arbitrator to decide how much money he makes.
As it turns out, and this shouldn't be a surprise, Byram is likely to choose a two-year deal. This would allow Ferris to walk his client right to free agency.
Moreover, this puts the Sabres in a tough spot, as now, it is going to be all but impossible to trade the defenseman going forward.
Byram is a special talent, and lots of teams will be clamouring for him in two seasons from now. As a result, the Sabres will likely lose him for nothing.
It's a similar story to what we saw out of Ferris and Marner so many years ago. However, it's now being done right across the border.
Ultimately, this is just bad for the Sabres franchise, and we imagine they would much rather this all just go away sooner rather than later.
