Nathan MacKinnon caught a massive break today, giving head coach Jared Bednar a reason to exhale ahead of their next matchup.

The league officially stepped in and rescinded the controversial major penalty assessed to the superstar center following a heated exchange on the ice.
This is not just a minor correction on the official scoresheet. It completely resets his disciplinary clock back to zero and removes a dark cloud hanging over the roster.
The NHL rulebook is strictly unforgiving when it comes to major infractions.
If a skater accumulates two of those calls within a specific window of games, it immediately triggers an automatic suspension from the Department of Player Safety.
Losing a player of that exact caliber would have been a devastating blow to the locker room during this tight Western Conference playoff push.

The Avalanche avoid a massive offensive setback

With 104 points already in the bank, he is single-handedly carrying the top-tier offense night after night.
He has absolutely dominated the competition this season, racking up 43 goals while posting a remarkable +55 rating.
Bednar relies heavily on his franchise center to generate controlled entries and dictate the physical pace of the game.
When the Avalanche establish a relentless forecheck, it all starts with their top line forcing heavy turnovers along the boards.
They desperately need his elite transition game to break down opposing defensemen off the rush and create high-danger scoring chances.
Career-wise, MacKinnon has always played with a hard, physical edge, but he rarely crosses the line into dangerous or suspendable territory.
At a massive $12.6 million cap hit, he is paid handsomely to stay on the ice and deliver consistent offensive output on the power play.
The defensive unit also benefits significantly when he is out there dominating possession and keeping the puck 200 feet away from their own net.
Solid execution in the neutral zone prevents the opposition from trapping the Avalanche in their own end for extended, exhausting shifts.
Now, the team can focus purely on stringing together wins on this homestand rather than scrambling to replace their absolute best asset.
Maybe Bednar's comments after that game had an impact on the league's decision.
