NHL Player Safety rules on Gabe Vilardi's egregious embellishment on Matthew Knies

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies got called for high-sticking Gabe Vilardi, but the embellishment was one of the most ridiculous things we've seen.
Matthew Knies found himself in a bizarre situation last night as he received a high-sticking penalty with just three minutes to go against the Winnipeg Jets.
Ultimately, it was a pretty ridiculous play. As you can see below, Jets star Gabe Vilardi sold the call in the most dramatic way possible.
He didn't even get touched, although he acted as though someone had just speared him in the eye. It was horrible to watch, and it is the kind of play that is a stain on the sport.
Having said that, the referees still sided with Vilardi, and it is something that easily could have cost the Toronto Maple Leafs a victory.
After the game, there were calls for NHL Player Safety to look into this. After all, they have ruled on embellishment before.
With the 5 PM deadline upon us, we now know how NHL Player Safety is ruling on this. As you will read, Leafs fans will not be happy.
NHL Player Safety rules on Gabe Vilardi
The Department of Player Safety has not commented on the play, which means they are going to be looking the other way on this one.
Given everything we have seen from the Department of Player Safety over the years, this is not at all surprising.
Ultimately, the Maple Leafs have gotten the short end of the stick all over again, and it is very doubtful that the trend will change anytime soon.
For now, the Leafs will have to focus on what they can control, and what serves them the best right now is winning.
