The Toronto Maple Leafs have a bit of a situation with goaltender Anthony Stolarz, and as it turns out, Montreal Canadiens goalie Samuel Montembeault is an option.
In case you haven't noticed, the Toronto Maple Leafs have a huge issue with goaltender Anthony Stolarz, as he has been out for over a month, and no improvement in sight.
There have been very few updates on the goaltender. All we know is that he is not skating, and he isn't coming back anytime soon.
The Leafs have refused to put Stolarz on long-term injured reserve, and there is this sense that they will have no choice but to do it very soon.
If the Leafs were to put Stolarz on LTIR, they would not be in a good spot, as Joseph Woll and Dennis Hildeby would be their tandem. Hildeby remains unproven, and Woll is injury-prone.
With that in mind, some Leafs analysts believe the team should look into a real solution, such as Montreal Canadiens goaltender Samuel Montembeault.
The Maple Leafs could look at Samuel Montembeault
On TSN 1050 Overdrive, it was suggested that the Leafs could look for a move to acquire Montembeault, especially now that Jacob Fowler is taking the reins in Montreal.
While it is unclear how the Leafs would accomplish this, Montembeault is seen as a better option than Hildeby and someone who could then be flipped later on.
Sure, this is a nice bit of fantasy from the TSN broadcasters. However, Montembeault has not been good this season, and the Leafs should forget about him.
A 3.65 goals-against average and .857 save percentage is simply not good enough, and in that case, the Leafs would be better off with Hildeby.
While some ideas sound good on paper, in practice, they are actually pretty darn terrible, and this is one of them.
