There is no denying it that William Nylander of the Toronto Maple Leafs is playing with an injury at the Olympics for Team Sweden, but NHL Insider Pierre Lebrun relays that there is nothing to worry about, according to Sweden's coaching staff.
Nylander is in a tough position because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but he could be compromising his NHL season for it.
Team Sweden states there is nothing to worry about with William Nylander
Jim Parsons of the Hockey Writers reported on Nylander's status, and what the Team Sweden coaching staff had to say about him after giving him a day off of practice.
Team Sweden doesn't seem worried about his injury, but they could just be hiding that to keep one of their star players from going home.
Pierre LeBrun got an inside scoop from Team Sweden's coaching staff.
"It’s a maintenance thing. He’s done two full ice practices with us and felt, after yesterday, a bit sore, so we’ll just give him an extra day. And then we’ll see for tomorrow if he’s ready to go. It’s going to be a pretty late decision.”-Sam Hallam Head Coach of Team Sweden
This puts the Maple Leafs in a tough position, because you look bad if you pull Nylander from the Olympics.
You also look bad if he gets more hurt and misses a prolonged period of time once the Olympics conclude.
The Leafs also do not have the authority to pull him, since it was the NHL Player's Association that pushed for Olympic participation.
Meaning it ultimately falls down to Nylander's decision, and it looks to be an emotional decision not an objective one for Nylander.
