Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube is currently on the hot seat, and according to Chris Johnston, the Leafs have decided on a replacement.
Marc Savard was recently fired by the Toronto Maple Leafs after a disappointing tenure as one of the team's assistant coaches.
His work on the power play was abysmal, and the Leafs had no choice but to make a move. However, there were some rumblings that the true target was always Craig Berube.
Berube seems to have bought himself some time, and it is very unlikely that the head coach is going to be fired anytime soon.
That said, if things were to go south and the Leafs had no choice but to get rid of Berube, then there is one coach who appears to be the likely replacement.
Maple Leafs still interested in Peter DeBoer
According to Chris Johnston of TSN and The Athletic, the rumors are true. The Toronto Maple Leafs are interested in hiring Peter DeBoer.
I would think Pete DeBoer would be the main target if they got there, but I at this point would have no reason to believe they've got that far; no reason to believe that that's imminent
It has been reported that DeBoer isn't all the way interested in a job with the Toronto Maple Leafs right now, as he is more focused on Team Canada and the Olympics.
Having said that, there is definitely an opportunity here if DeBoer decides to change his mind, and the Leafs are forced into a difficult spot.
For now, the Leafs' focus will be on improving the roster and giving Berube a chance to turn things around going into the Olympic break.
It's not going to be an easy path forward, but the Leafs are certainly keen on trying to make it work.
