Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson has remained on the trading block for a while, and throughout this time, the Toronto Maple Leafs have shown interest.

The Toronto Maple Leafs need a right-handed puck-moving defenseman, and unfortunately for them, there are only so many available on the trade market.
One of the defensemen who has been thrown around in trade discussions is none other than Rasmus Andersson of the Calgary Flames. According to numerous reports, the Leafs have continuously shown interest.
Andersson himself has gone back and forth on waiving his no-trade clause, and it has forced teams like the Leafs to take a step back. However, a new report suggests a trade and a subsequent long-term signing might be possible.

Toronto Maple Leafs in contact with the Calgary Flames

According to the newest episode of 'Insider Trading,' the Leafs have been calling around regarding Andersson. Furthermore, as Pierre LeBrun reports, the defenseman is open to signing long-term with the Leafs.
One thing I should mention is that among the teams that have circled back on Rasmus Andersson is the Toronto Maple Leafs.

We know the Leafs tried to trade for Andersson last year at the deadline, and why I mentioned Toronto is that my understanding is that the Leafs would be one of those teams that perhaps Andersson would consider extending with, if in fact a trade would work out between those two teams.
This is fantastic news for Leafs general manager Brad Treliving, who now has some increased leverage when it comes to a deal for the defenseman.

Rasmus Andersson is having a resurgence

Rasmus Andersson did not have a great season with the Flames in 2024-25, as he only managed 31 points and a -38 rating in 81 games.
In 2025-26, Andersson is having a nice resurgence, as he already has 22 points through 34 games, and his rating is at a dead even 0. Needless to say, something has happened in his game to make him improve.
At 29 years old, Andersson could provide a ton of value to a prospective team, and the Maple Leafs would absolutely love to have a player like this on their team.
Whether or not they will be able to pull this off, is something that still very much remains to be seen. The ball is in Treliving's court.
