Toronto Maple Leafs make last-minute roster announcement

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Marshall Rifai has been trying to get a solid gig with the roster as of late, and today, he received some news regarding that endeavor.
If you are a Toronto Maple Leafs fan who has a vested interest in the Marlies, then you are probably a fan of Marshall Rifai.
The physical defenseman has been working extremely hard to get more opportunities in the NHL, to varying degrees of success. He wants the opportunity, but the Leafs are busy.
There are a lot of defensemen on the team, and Rifai just isn't being given the fairest of shakes. Last weekend, Rifai actually made his season debut.
However, he was eventually put back on the bench, and it led to speculation about what would happen to him going into the break.
Marshall Rifai sent down to the Toronto Marlies
On Friday morning, an announcement was made involving Rifai, and it is one that is certainly going to be a bit of a disappointment for him.
Simply put, the defenseman is going back down to the Toronto Marlies, who are not taking a break for the Olympics like their NHL counterparts.
This is probably for the best, as it will give Rifai some ice time. After all, he missed the first portion of the season with an injury.
Overall, this is a time for Rifai to show people that he can be an NHL defenseman who is above the level of the AHL.
Rifai is 27 years old, and he is running out of time to get a permanent NHL gig. With that in mind, we would not be surprised to see him leave the organization next season.
Hopefully, heading into the final stretch of the year, the Maple Leafs can find some time and space for the defenseman.
