The Toronto Maple Leafs were eyeing one of their former forwards; however, the Columbus Blue Jackets swept in and made a deal with the Seattle Kraken.

Ahead of the Holidays, the NHL roster freeze has come into effect. This means teams cannot make any trades or put guys on waivers.
Late last night, teams were trying to beat the deadline by getting some last-minute deals done. For instance, the Montreal Canadiens completed a trade for Phillip Danault.
Leafs fans were eager to see if they would make a deal, especially when you consider how this team has been in a funk since the start of the season.
In fact, they had been targeting forward Mason Marchment, who played for the Leafs many moons ago, and was already fed up with the Seattle Kraken after 29 games.

Blue Jackets beat the NHL roster freeze

Unfortunately, for the Maple Leafs, general manager Brad Treliving was beaten to the punch. The Columbus Blue Jackets acquired Marchment for a 2nd round pick and a 4th round pick.

In 29 games this season, Marchment has four goals and nine assists for 13 points. This is a drop off from his 22-goal pace in Dallas last season.
Clearly, the forward was not happy with the directon of the Kraken, who have been absolutely abysmal following a decent start to the season.
At this point, it remains to be seen if things will go any better for Marchment in Columbus, especially when the Blue Jackets aren't tracking for the postseason.
Whatever the case may be, it is going to be fascinating to see how the trade market shapes out once the New Year begins.
