The Toronto Maple Leafs are going to be looking to make some deals at the trade deadline, and they have a defenseman who could be moved for some good value.
With the NHL trade deadline on the horizon, there is no doubt that Leafs general manager Brad Treliving is going to be facing some real pressure.
The Leafs want to make the postseason, and in order to do so, they are going to have to improve the team in some capacity.
As they are constructed, this Leafs team certainly needs some work. Right-handed puck-moving defenseman and first-line wingers are needed.
In order to acquire those assets, the Leafs need to give up assets of their own. According to Chris Johnston, Simon Benoit might be the answer.
Toronto Maple Leafs could get value on Simon Benoit
Due to Simon Benoit's cap hit and some of his success from last year's postseason, it appears as though the defenseman is quite valuable.
[Simon] Benoit represents a player who could bring back some value with a cap-friendly contract that runs through next season. That's the main reason his name has recently started making the rounds.
Getting rid of Benoit might be the right move, especially since he is a roster player that teams could use right away.
Of course, if the return for Benoit is a right-handed defenseman, then the Leafs would absolutely see this as the correct move.
That said, Treliving must find a willing trade partner, and that is actually a lot easier said than done. However, when push comes to shove, Benoit will be sought after.
It is a difficult decision to make, but that is why Treliving is getting paid the big bucks these days.
