It's still very early in the 2023-24 NHL season, but teams are already looking to fill holes in roster spots. The Vancouver Canucks and Pittsburgh Penguins have done just that by pulling off a four player trade.

The Canucks have acquired defenceman Mark Friedman and forward Ty Glover from the Pens. Going the other way are defenceman Jack Rathbone and forward Karel Plasek.

The most recognizable name in this trade is Rathbone. Canucks GM Patrik Allvin said the trade was about giving the blueline a fresh start.

"I would like to thank Jack for all the time he spent with our organization and always pushing hard when competing for a spot. It has been a tough couple of years for him and this will give him a fresh start. The two players coming back in this trade will add to our depth as we continue to look at ways to improve our organization."

The Penguins have stated that Rathbone will report to the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, while Plasek is being sent to the ECHL.
