A blockbuster trade proposal has emerged that would see Canucks superstar Quinn Hughes traded to the Devils, reuniting him there with his two brothers
Canucks President Jim Rutherford hinted at a Hughes reunion with his brothers
Rutherford had already fueled the whispers of speculation a month ago by recognizing Hughes' desire to one day play with his brothers, Jack and Luke, who are both members of the New Jersey Devils.
Soon after, he admitted publicly that if a contract extension can't be signed before the 2026-27 trade deadline, when Hughes will have just one year remaining on his deal, the Canucks might not have any other option but to "do something." That is, trade him.
Brooks believes that because New Jersey will probably not trade either Jack or Luke, the logical step is to add Quinn to the Devils.
Of course, any trade would need to be substantial in order to be worth losing the Canucks' captain and cornerstone defenceman.
While Rutherford has stated he's interested in trying to keep
Hughes for the long haul, the pressure gets cranked up in summer 2026, when Quinn can sign an extension as of July 1.
If a trade does not occur until the beginning of the 2026-27 season, trade discussions can move from rumors to cold, hard reality by the deadline.
